About

Relay is an accredited national nonprofit institution of higher education serving 2,000 teachers and 400 school leaders across the United States. Our offerings include master’s degrees and certification programs for teachers and teaching residents, fellowships for principals and school leaders, unique opportunities for college students to explore teaching and online courses for members of the public. Our mission is to teach teachers and school leaders to develop in all students the academic skills and strength of character needed to succeed in college and life.

The Relay Graduate School of Education Texas Alternative Certification Program was approved by the State Board for Educator Certification on August 4, 2014 and was granted a status of “Accredited - Approved” for the 2015-16 reporting year. Additional information can be found on the TEA Consumer Information about Educator Preparation Programs webpage.

The Relay Teaching Residency is a 36 credit hour program. Relay’s academic calendar and program structure are designed to accommodate the demanding schedules of graduate students who hold full-time positions in schools. We deliver about 40% of the content online and 60% in person so that graduate students have flexibility to complete large portions of the coursework when it is most convenient for their schedules.

Relay completely changed my practice in teaching. It was the first graduate program I found that made coming to grad classes purposeful and fun. I recommend Relay to everyone I know in education—if they are willing to work hard and grow as an educator, than this is the place for them.

Program Info

The Residency is a two-year program for aspiring teachers. We are looking for talented and committed teachers from diverse backgrounds who seek to make a positive impact teaching particularly in communities that have been most often denied educational opportunity.

This pathway includes a gradual on-ramp into the teaching profession and additional supports, including a school-based mentor and three hours of class focused on teaching practice each week. Residents take on lead teaching responsibility throughout the first year and are prepared to be hired into lead teaching roles in year two.

Step 1: Apply for a Residency position at a partner school.

Apply for a Residency position directly through our partner schools. The application review will include checking your unofficial transcripts for eligibility into the program and you may be invited to interview with the partner school/network/district. Partner school applications typically open in the fall or winter for the upcoming school year. Check the links below for available programs and positions:

Step 2: Apply to Relay Houston

Once you are accepted into a Residency position, we will send you a unique link to fill out the official Relay graduate school application. Do not apply to Relay on your own before then, because you will not have access to the correct application.

If certification-seeking, begin studying for the TExES content test recommended by your employer. This the first major step towards earning your state certification through Relay.
